MAFFI KAAMATAN CELEBRATION CEREMONY 2025

KOTA KINABALU, 20 June 2025 – The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry (MAFFI), Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan, emphasized the importance of unity and food security in his speech in conjunction with the MAFFI-level Kaamatan Festival Celebration 2025.

The event, which aimed to celebrate the Kaamatan Festival at the ministry level, was held following the state-level celebration launched on 1 May in Tambunan, with its climax at Hongkod Koisaan KDCA Penampang on 30 and 31 May.

He emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, “Kaamatan Montok Toinsanan” or “Kaamatan for All”, which clearly reflects the longstanding unity among the multiracial and multiethnic communities in Sabah.

He said that although the Kaamatan Festival was originally celebrated by the Kadazan-Dusun, Murut, and Rungus (KDMR) communities as a gesture of gratitude for a bountiful rice harvest, it is now embraced by all segments of society in Sabah—regardless of race or religion—as a platform to ensure that traditional culture is passed down to future generations.

“Kaamatan is not only a heritage celebration, but also a platform that unites us all,” he said.

He called upon all MAFFI staff, along with departments and agencies under the ministry, to uphold noble values such as community spirit (mogitatabang), mutual respect, and tolerance in carrying out their duties.

He further stated that for MAFFI, the Kaamatan Festival symbolizes the importance of food security for the survival and well-being of the community.

“As an organization responsible for the development of the agriculture, fisheries, and livestock sectors, we must double our efforts to ensure food security and safety in Sabah are consistently safeguarded,” he stressed.

On the occasion, Kitingan also congratulated Datin Dr. Shuhadah Mustapha on her appointment as the new Director of the Sabah Department of Fisheries on 11 June, and subsequently as Chairperson of the Organizing Committee for the 2025 MAFFI-level Kaamatan Festival celebration.

Her appointment is seen as a fresh boost of motivation in advancing Sabah’s fisheries sector and was key to the successful organization of today’s ministry-level Kaamatan celebration.
